Theo Zographos comments on recession, local economy and community safety

The following is an extract from an article that appeared in the Monash Leader newspaper on July 8 2020

Councillor Theo Zographos said there had been a decrease in people going out as virus numbers surged in the past week.

“Winter is the quietest time for any activity in our shopping centres and precincts … the recession is a huge factor in industries including hospitality and I think this week is the worst week we’ve seen in a number of months,” Cr Zographos said.

He said he visited Eaton Mall last week and spoke to traders who supported the idea of security guards patrolling the precinct.

“I think there’s work to be done in terms of looking at a trial of the council having its own security guards or contractors in busy periods.”

Zographos: More Victorian councils must act to provide discounts to ratepayers

The following is an extract from an article that appeared in the Monash Leader newspaper on July 3 2020

Cr Theo Zographos said he welcomed the move for Monash ratepayers.

“Most councils aren’t thinking the same way, we need to be influencing those councils to get further in touch with their communities as things might get worse before they are better in the next six months,” Cr Zographos said.

Ratepayers Victoria Dean Hurlston said he applauded the council for putting ratepayers first.

“This is what real leadership looks like when unexpected circumstances impacts our community,” Mr Hurlston said.

“All councils should follow the lead of Monash and cut non-essential spending to provide rate relief for ratepayers,” he said.
